Boiler relocation

Moving a boiler for a kitchen renovation.

We relocate domestic gas boilers as part of kitchen renovations, extensions and refurbishments across Motherwell and roughly 40 miles of Scotland’s Central Belt. That covers the pipework and flue alterations, recommissioning and testing, by a Gas Safe registered engineer, registration 961480. Moving a boiler is notifiable work and must be done by a registered engineer.

We reply to every enquiry — the same working day, in writing.

Timing

Timing it with the rest of the work

The cheapest time to move a boiler is while the walls and floors are already open and the other trades are already on site. Doing it afterwards means lifting things that have just been laid. If you are planning a kitchen, it is worth having this conversation before the units are ordered rather than after — where the boiler ends up changes the layout, and the layout changes what is possible.

Where it can go

Where a boiler can go, and what constrains it

Most positions are possible, but three things decide it: where the flue can safely terminate, how far the gas and water pipework has to travel, and whether the new position can be reached for servicing. A boiler in an awkward spot costs a little more every year for the rest of its life.

  • Utility room — usually the easiest, and the quietest.
  • Garage — workable, with frost protection considered.
  • Loft — often possible with proper access, boarding and lighting.
  • A different kitchen cupboard — common, and the one that frees the most useful space.
Move or replace

Moving an old boiler, or replacing it

If your boiler is near the end of its life, moving it means spending money on something you will be replacing soon — and paying for the pipework twice. We will tell you plainly which we think it is and price both, and if the answer is that the existing one has years left in it, that is what we will say. The point is helping you make the right decision, not selling work you do not need. See boiler installation if a replacement makes more sense.

How it runs

How it runs

  1. A conversation about the renovation and what you are trying to achieve.
  2. A survey of the existing system and the proposed position.
  3. A recommendation, including if we think the position is a bad idea.
  4. A clear quote.
  5. The move, recommissioning and full safety testing.
  6. Heating and hot water checked working before we leave.
Questions

Common questions

Can my existing boiler be moved?

In most cases yes, whether it is a combi, system or regular boiler. We assess the boiler and the proposed position first, because the flue route and the pipework decide what is practical.

Can a boiler be moved into a loft?

Often, provided there is proper access, boarding and lighting, and the installation meets current regulations. Access matters for every service after the move, not just the day it goes in.

Does a boiler relocation need a Gas Safe engineer?

Yes, always. Moving a boiler means altering gas pipework and the flue. That is notifiable work and it is not a job for a general builder.

Is it worth moving the boiler during a kitchen renovation?

Usually. The walls and floors are already open and the trades are already there, so it costs far less disruption than doing it later.

Should I move an old boiler or replace it?

If the boiler is near the end of its life, moving it spends money on something you will be replacing soon, and pays for the pipework twice. We will tell you which we think it is and price both.

How long does it take?

Most relocations are a day or two depending on how far the boiler moves and what the pipework and flue need. We will tell you before starting.
